After two nights in Kunming we headed for the station and the overnight train to Dali, some 300 kilometres to the west.
Dali has an ancient town, three pagodas and the largest plateau lake – Erhai in China.
Local fishermen train cormorants to dive for fish, having ringed their necks to prevent the birds swallowing the fish.
All over south west China people use the roads as a convenient place to thresh and dry rice and other grains.
At the temple there’s stiff competition as to who can burn the biggest incense.
And with Yunnan Province being home to 26 of China’s minority nationalities, there’s plenty of colourful dress to see.
And the three pagodas.
