In 2004 the only way to get to Jiuzhaigou was by road from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province in South West China, situated on the Jin River, a tributary of the Upper Yangtze.
In 2004 they were building a new road to Juizhaigou, much of it elevated (see background) which meant the existing road was left to be pounded into dust and mud, making the 11 hour journey even more uncomfortable and at times heart stopping. Some of this new road was destroyed in the massive May 2008 earthquake.
In many places the old road came perilously close to the river and at times both buses and trucks ended up in it.
